The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education’s Spotlight Database will tell you if your college or university denies students and faculty the rights they are granted by the Constitution and/or by institutional promises. Here, you will find detailed information on these college speech regulations — or speech codes — at more than 450 institutions. You’ll also find information about specific incidents of censorship, violations of due process, and more. If you are troubled by what you see, you can use our “Take Action” form to contact your school and let them know you expect better. Please refer to “Using FIRE’s Spotlight Database” for instructions on how best to find the information you want.
If the school you are looking for is not included in the database, you can request more information about its speech codes by filling out this form.
FIRE’s Spotlight database rates an institution’s written policies governing student speech. The rating does not take other institutional actions into account and does not preclude FIRE from taking action in defense of student and faculty rights.
