Rights in the News: 'Human Events' Column adds to Chorus of Bucknell Criticism

Briefly, a reminder to Torch readers to check out my editorial in Human Events, co-authored with Travis Eaione of the Bucknell University Conservatives Club. This is the latest national media attention to Bucknell's shameful treatment of the BUCC. Hopefully Bucknell will use the beginning of the new semester to wipe the slate clean and finally make good on its promises of free expression.

While the situation at Bucknell has reached a boiling point, resulting in Bucknell being added to FIRE's Red Alert list, a potential free speech controversy is budding at Oklahoma State University. At issue is whether a policy on distributing flyers is a violation of student free speech rights. Will offered FIRE's take to The Daily O'Collegian, whose article has also been picked up on UWire. We'll keep Torch readers posted on this interesting free speech issue.

Meanwhile, FIRE's historic advertising campaign continues, as students picking up their newspapers at the University of Georgia, the University of Minnesota, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and (drumroll!) Red Alert school Tufts University all learned this week. On top of our full-page ad in U.S. News & World Report's annual college rankings issue, a whole lot of students are getting a crash course in speech codes and seeing where their schools fall. Now that's some news they can use.
