  • University of Wisconsin: Students’ Due Process Rights

    March 13, 2009

FIRE successfully persuaded the University of Wisconsin’s Board of Regents to affirm due process rights for students, including the option of a hearing before a committee including student peers, attorney representation in the case of serious allegations, and both e-mail and paper notification of proceedings. The Board had proposed changes to the State Administrative Code governing infractions and judicial procedures within Wisconsin’s public universities that would have limited due process rights and granted more discretion to administrators. Promethean Editor-in-Chief Marcus White said the staff was notified during a meeting with the UWS Dean of Students Office on Friday afternoon that the office was closing the investigation […]

While schools typically back off these censorship attempts under pressure from groups like FIRE, there always seems to be at least one school every year who’s willing to learn this lesson the hard way. This year is no different, thanks to administrators at the University of Wisconsin – Superior (UW-Superior) who took issue with some April Fools’ jokes in the college paper. […]

  • Religious Liberty Finally Secure in the University of Wisconsin System

    February 5, 2007

The University of Wisconsin has finally acknowledged its constitutional obligation to uphold the religious liberty of its students. Last December, the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents passed a new policy binding on all institutions within the University of Wisconsin System that allows religious student groups to choose their members based on their beliefs. That decision comes on the heels of a lawsuit filed by the Alliance Defense Fund on behalf of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin–Superior. The new policy states: Student organizations that select their members or officers on the basis of commitment to a set […]
