September 11 and the College Campus, Five Years Later

Five years after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, FIRE remembers the victims and heroes of the attacks on our nation. As FIRE wrote on September 11, 2001, “While mourning the victims of Tuesday’s atrocities with all of you, FIRE believes that part of the defiance of darkness is to carry on with the ordinary labor of the defense of liberty and decency.” In the wake of that day, FIRE has dealt with many cases and issues arising from the terrorist attacks, from the well-known comments of Ward Churchill to lesser-known controversies like those at Johns Hopkins University and UC San Diego, along with many others. FIRE President Greg Lukianoff and Legal Director Samantha Harris remark on FIRE’s defense of campus liberty in the wake of 9/11 today on The Torch.
