‘So to Speak’ Podcast: ACLU National Legal Director David Cole

In July, the ACLU tapped Georgetown University Law Center Professor David Cole to be its new national legal director. In that role, Cole will oversee nearly 300 lawyers and a docket of about 1,400 state and federal lawsuits.

On today’s episode of So to Speak: The Free Speech Podcast, Wall Street Journal Supreme Court Correspondent Jess Bravin interviews Cole about his new job and explores some of the hottest topics in the First Amendment world: flag burning, campaign finance reform, what can legally be done about rising concerns over “fake news,” and more.

Cole also speculates on what the future may hold for the ACLU and the First Amendment after President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.

This is the first podcast in FIRE and So to Speak’s exclusive partnership with the First Amendment Salon. The First Amendment Salon is a quarterly gathering of members of the First Amendment community for a 90-minute discussion with leading thinkers concerning a timely topic related to freedom of expression.

A video version of this and past First Amendment Salon conversations can be found on FIRE’s YouTube page. To learn more about the First Amendment Salon, visit the “special collections” section of FIRE’s First Amendment Library.

The next scheduled First Amendment Salon will take place on April 5, 2017 at the Floyd Abrams Institute for Freedom of Expression at Yale Law School, where New York Times Supreme Court Correspondent Adam Liptak will interview decorated First Amendment litigator Floyd Abrams about his forthcoming book The Soul of the First Amendment. Stay tuned to So to Speak for a podcast version of that conversation in April.
