So to Speak podcast: spring 2017 semester in review

FIRE President and CEO Greg Lukianoff once declared 2014 the year of the heckler. But after high profile examples of mob censorship at the University of California, Berkeley, Middlebury College, and Claremont McKenna College, has 2017 become the new year of the heckler — at least on college campuses?

On this week’s episode of So to Speak: The Free Speech Podcast, I’m joined by my FIRE colleagues Will Creeley, Samantha Harris, and Joe Cohn to help me answer this and other questions about free speech on campus during the spring 2017 semester.

Among the additional questions we tackle are:

  • Is DePaul University “America’s worst school for free speech” and is it getting worse?
  • How have Muslim-American activist Linda Sarsour, Vice President Mike Pence, and the institutions that invited them to give commencement addresses weathered this year’s disinvitation season?
  • Legislatures — state and federal — are taking notice of campus free speech controversies. In what ways have they responded, and are these responses good, bad, or a mixed bag for campus civil liberties advocates?
  • Also, what is FIRE’s staff monitoring as we head into the summer and the fall 2017 semester?
