SPLC and Dozens of Other Groups File Two More Amicus Briefs Opposing ‘Hosty v. Carter’

As we announced on Wednesday, FIRE authored an amicus brief asking the U.S. Supreme Court to consider and reject the Seventh Circuit’s decision in Hosty v. Carter.

On Thursday, FIRE’s brief was joined by two more terrific briefs asking the Court to consider and reject the Hosty decision.

The Student Press Law Center (SPLC) and attorney Richard M. Goehler authored a brief on behalf of the following organizations:

  • Student Press Law Center
  • American Society of Newspaper Editors
  • Associated Collegiate Press
  • Associated Press Managing Editors
  • College Media Advisers
  • College Newspaper Business and Advertising Managers
  • Community College Journalism Association
  • Independent Press Association/Campus Journalism Project
  • National Federation of Press Women
  • National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association
  • National Newspaper Association
  • Newspaper Association of America
  • Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press
  • Society for Collegiate Journalists
  • Society of Professional Journalists

A third brief on behalf of journalism educators was prepared by attorneys Robert A. Long, Jr, and Kurt A. Wimmer of the law firm Covington and Burling. The parties to that brief are:

  • Annenberg School for Communication of the University of Pennsylvania
  • Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication
  • Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication
  • Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism
  • Pennsylvania Center for the First Amendment
  • Pennsylvania State University College of Communications
  • S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University
  • Thomas Jefferson Center for Free Expression
  • University of Georgia Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication
  • University of Missouri School of Journalism

When so many prominent groups speak with a single voice condemning a Court of Appeals decision, I believe it’s time for the Supreme Court to intervene and set things right. I would like to thank all of the groups who joined any of these briefs for helping in the fight against this dangerous opinion! Keep your constitutional fingers crossed.
