Still looking for a New Year’s resolution? Improve the state of free expression on your campus!

Eat more vegetables. Exercise three times a week. Drink more water. Each year, millions of Americans make New Year’s resolutions to improve themselves. Physical health and wellness are important, but what about the health of our civil liberties?

In the new year, FIRE urges you to make an impact on the well-being of our nation’s universities by promoting and encouraging the exercise of First Amendment rights on campus. What is one concrete way you can do this? Urge your college to adopt a free speech policy statement in the model of the “Report of the Committee on Freedom of Expression” at the University of Chicago (better known as the “Chicago Statement”). The Chicago Statement is an eloquent statement of principles that represents an institution's unwavering commitment to freedom of expression. To date, 55 institutions and faculty bodies have adopted a version of the Chicago Statement. Your college could be next!

Ready to put your New Year’s resolution of committing to freedom of expression into action? Although the toolkit contest is over, you can still use the information, sample letters and emails, and graphics from FIRE’s fall 2018 activism toolkit focused on the Chicago Statement to begin your advocacy on campus.
