FIRE West Coast Regional Conference
This special, one-day event offers students a crash course in their right to free expression. Attendees at FIRE’s West Coast conference will learn about the history of free speech in higher education and the contemporary struggle against speech codes. FIRE staff will work with students to develop winning strategies for protecting freedom of expression at their college or university.
What are the details?
The FIRE West Coast Regional Conference will take place at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) on Saturday, April 28, 2018.
What are we doing?
The conference agenda includes a review of the principles of free speech, the parameters of First Amendment law, and the best strategies for campus action. Attendees will also hear from Ken White, a partner at Brown White & Osborn LLP in Los Angeles. White is a former federal prosecutor, and his practice includes both criminal defense and First Amendment litigation. He’s a frequent writer and speaker on free speech, the intersection of the First Amendment and internet culture, and criminal justice. Through his free speech and criminal justice blog Popehat.com, he also helps arrange for pro bono defense of bloggers and other online writers threatened with frivolous defamation suits.
Attendees will be treated to three meals throughout the day. FIRE will also pay a stipend of up to $300 for travel costs.
