Student Press Law Center Announces Winner of 2006 College Press Freedom Award

The Viking News, the student newspaper of Ocean County College, has been given the 2006 College Press Freedom Award.

The award, sponsored by the Student Press Law Center and the Associated Collegiate Press, is given each year to a college student journalist or student news organization that has demonstrated outstanding support for the free press rights of America's college student media.

The Viking News was presented the award at the Associated Collegiate Press/College Media Advisers national convention in St. Louis on October 28. Three editors of the Viking News had sued the President of Ocean County College for removing their adviser Karen Bosley after the newspaper printed several articles critical of the OCC administration.

FIRE reported in August that a federal judge had issued a preliminary injunction reinstating Bosley. The judge wrote, “It is clear that such a retaliatory removal would...have an impermissibly chilling effect on the paper’s student editors’ freedom of expression in future issues of the paper.”
