Summer Interns in ‘The FIRE Quarterly’

Each summer, FIRE hosts undergraduate and legal interns to assist staff with various projects. This year, in addition to our three legal interns, FIRE welcomed eleven undergraduates into the office who worked primarily to update FIRE’s Spotlight: The Campus Freedom Resource. The interns also attended presentations made by FIRE staff and friends of FIRE on a variety of topics we hope will help them in their academic and professional futures.

The recent issue of The FIRE Quarterly features reflections from undergraduate interns Shauna Moser and Sherri Geng, who described their experiences at FIRE.

Shauna, a senior at Penn State, wrote:

Interning at FIRE has certainly changed my perspective. The ideas of liberty go far beyond defending the rights of conservatives to speak on campus. At the same time, this internship has only served to strengthen my own personal beliefs […]. Without this opportunity, I may never have had the chance to learn exactly what rational, articulate, and intelligent individuals on the other side of the political spectrum believe, nor would I have learned the reasoning behind their arguments.

Sherri, a sophomore at Harvard, also shared her feelings about interning at FIRE:

At FIRE, I realized, they don’t teach you what is an appropriate point of view and what is not. They set the cards up, and then give you room to challenge what you assumed to be correct. [...] It often took more than one glance at a particularly heinous statement to remind myself that in this search for truth, liberty often trumps personal opinion or even the common rules of propriety.

FIRE accomplished so much this summer with the help of our interns. If you are an undergraduate student or a law student interested in interning for FIRE, please visit our undergraduate or legal intern pages.
