Sustainability All the Time: An Analysis of University of Delaware’s ResLife Proposal

May 1, 2008

As I wrote yesterday, the University of Delaware Faculty Senate is poised to restore the highly politicized indoctrination program that was roundly condemned last year, even by the faculty themselves. But the Faculty Senate should reject it.

I analyze the overall program goals, the seven “learning outcomes,” the many ways that ResLife proposes to shape students’ thoughts, values, attitudes, and beliefs, and the endless curriculum of “sustainability”not just environmental sustainability, but a highly politicized set of social and political viewshere.

If the faculty is intent on having a plan for the fall, this is not it. Try cutting half of the proposal out, and getting rid of the educational goals and intended learning outcomes, and the program might have a chance of being morally and legally sound.
