To monitor motion picture compliance with the Production Code, American Catholics create the Legion of Decency to review films for wholesomeness and to mobilize mass action against movies. More than 7 million people pledged not to patronize theaters that played non-Legion-approved movies. Such pledges were repeated annually for years.
