The Production Code Is Revised for the First Time

By December 11, 1956

Hollywood, reflecting changing social mores, revises the Production Code for the first time since its inception in 1934. Some changes included removing the outright bans on the depiction of drugs, white slavery, and abortion. The changes come after the success of multiple movies released without the Code’s seal of approval, including “The Moon Is Blue” and “The Man With the Golden Arm.”
