Tillman Act Is Passed

By January 26, 1907

The Tillman Act passes and becomes the first federal statute to prohibit corporations and national banks from making monetary contributions to federal candidates. The act is named after one of the bill’s sponsors, Senator Benjamin Tillman of South Carolina.
