Turning on the Spotlight

Today FIRE formally unveiled a brand-new web database called Spotlight: The Campus Freedom Resource. As our press release says:

Spotlight combines the information from FIRE’s two previously separate websites, thefire.org and speechcodes.org, to make one formidable new weapon in the battle for individual rights on campus. Visitors to FIRE’s Spotlight can click on the college or university of their choice and instantly see a more complete picture of that campus’ restrictions on liberty—everything from speech codes and actual cases of repression to media coverage and entries from FIRE’s blog, The Torch.

Speechcodes.org holds a special place in my heart—after all, when I was a FIRE intern two years ago, the vast majority of my time was spent researching for that then-new site. But Spotlight is even better. As we put it in the press release, “The information in that database, the result of thousands of hours of research, carries even more weight now that it appears beside actual instances of censorship.”

Spotlight will undoubtedly be a great resource for students and parents searching for colleges, alums who want to see what their alma mater is up to, and all other friends of liberty. We encourage you to check it out.
