What a year it’s been for FIRE! We’ve had our highs, like seeing the percentage of schools that severely restrict protected speech fall below the 50 percent mark for the first time, helping pass important state legislation banning free speech zones, and scoring the cover story of The Atlantic, which is already the second-most read cover story in the site’s history. And we experienced some lows, like watching students demand that professors resign following their comments on matters of public concern; calls for speech codes, trigger warnings, and bans on “microaggressions”; and the further deterioration of campus due process. These lows remind us that individual rights on campus are fragile, and they require a steadfast defender and watchdog like FIRE.
Whether you focus on the good or the bad, one thing is clear: FIRE issues are everywhere right now. It’s the perfect time to take advantage of the momentum we’ve gathered and make major strides towards achieving our mission.
Please consider donating to FIRE before the close of the year, so we can do just that. Gifts to FIRE are 100 percent tax-deductible, so be sure to donate before December 31 in order to secure your 2015 charitable tax deduction.
Every dollar helps make our fight stronger and we are immensely grateful for your support. Thank you so much for giving FIRE the opportunity to fight for what we all believe in.
