Weekly Media Round-up: UD, Claremont Colleges, and Remembering 9/11

Last week we applauded the victory for free speech at the University of Delaware in which a U.S. District Court ruled in favor of the free speech rights of student Maciej Murakowski. (Murakowski had been unjustly banned from the UD campus on the basis of the content of his website.) Among the mentions of the ruling in the regional and higher education press, Adam's coverage was noted in UCLA Professor Eugene Volokh's influential Volokh Conspiracy law blog.

Also this week, Campus Magazine Online commented on the state of free speech at the Claremont Colleges, spurred in part by Brandon's piece on the issue. Campus Magazine also posted our recent press release with information on our scholarship contests, incentive programs, and Facebook widgets. Thanks to Campus Magazine for helping get FIRE's message out at the start of what promises to be a busy academic year. Elsewhere, Luke's recent post reminding students of the offenses of FIRE's five red alert schools was tipped by Dartblog; and FIRE's efforts to rid campuses of oppressive speech codes earned mention on the anti-soma blog.

Yesterday, on the seventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Sam wrote a thoughtful piece reminding us of, in her words, "the importance of the freedoms that make this country what it is," and pointing out the all-too-many instances in the wake of 9/11 when those freedoms were brusquely pushed aside by our universities. Her post has gotten some nice mention on the blogs, and was plugged today on the widely read Phi Beta Cons blog. As evidenced by the latest incident at San Francisco State University, the complexities and emotions of 9/11even seven years latercontinue to roil campuses nationwide.
