Freedom of speech is a fundamental American right. It is essential for democracy, scientific progress, artistic expression, social justice, peace, and our ability to live authentically. FIRE is committed to promoting free speech, particularly to younger generations, and showing that it's a value worth fighting for. We believe in the next generation’s potential to advance free speech culture and we’re here to help them succeed.

The Free Speech Forum provides an in-depth understanding of the First Amendment civil rights. Throughout the week, participants will step out of their comfort zones, enhance their communication skills, and develop a strong understanding of the principles that uphold a democratic society. 

The curriculum will dive deeper into:

Free Speech Fundamentals

• Understand the history, significance, and scope of the First Amendment and its impact on society.
• Explore historical milestones in the evolution of free speech, and how it has shaped social and political movements.

Civil Discourse

• Master the art of civil dialogue, particularly when engaging with people whose opinions differ from your own.
• Practice the skills necessary to facilitate respectful, productive conversations, even when emotions run high or disagreements emerge.
• Learn strategies to bridge ideological divides and foster understanding.

Writing, Speaking, and Collaboration Skills

• Enhance your ability to write persuasively.
• Refine your public speaking techniques, learning how to engage an audience and articulate your ideas clearly and confidently.
• Gain hands-on experience working with others in group settings, from collaborative workshops to debate.

Real-World Experiences

• Visit the National Mall (and more!) to experience the intersection of history and politics firsthand.
• Engage with experts and keynote speakers.
• Attend interactive field trips designed to bring learning to life, helping you make connections between theory and practice.

By the end of the Free Speech Forum, participants will leave with a strong understanding of the principles of free speech, the skills to engage in civil discourse, and the confidence to advocate for democratic values. Whether in classrooms, community centers, or the public spaces, students will be better equipped to navigate complex conversations and take action on important causes.

Students will take two field trips to Washington, D.C., and visit the iconic landmarks where democracy was shaped and freedom of speech was championed. On these field trips, students will:

• Visit the National Mall

• Tour Washington, D.C.’s renowned museums

When are applications due?

• The application deadline is March 30, 2026. Due to the competitive nature of the program, we strongly recommend applying early. To apply for the 2026 Free Speech Forum, you must first create a login on our application portal. Please create your account to begin your application.

• Important: To submit your application, you'll need to create a CampInTouch account. When you click the application link on our website, you will be taken to the CampInTouch login page, where you can log in or sign up for a new account before beginning your application.

When can I expect to hear back about my application?

• Applications are not reviewed on a rolling basis, however, applying earlier is encouraged. FIRE will release our enrollment decisions in April.

How much does it cost?

• The forum is free! FIRE is committed to making it accessible for students to attend nationwide.

How should students get to Washington D.C.?

• Once students arrive at Ronald Reagan's National Airport or Union Station, FIRE will provide transit to and from the Forum location.

Is financial assistance available to help with transportation costs?

• We offer a limited number of need-based scholarships to help students with their travel costs to and from Washington, D.C. Students will be notified about the scholarship application process after they are accepted. 

Are meals included?

• Yes! Meals will be provided for the entire duration of the program.

How much supervision is there?

• In addition to the FIRE speakers and staff, trained resident advisors will be on-site at all times throughout the week to supervise attendees. There will be a 10-to-1 student to staff ratio.

How are roommates selected?

• Students will be placed in same-gender rooms. We’re happy to accommodate roommate requests (so feel free to invite your friends to apply!). Accepted students will have the opportunity to indicate their roommate preferences as the event approaches.

Can a student attend just part of the forum?

• No, students must attend the entirety of the program.
