Baraboo, Wisconsin: Board of Education proposes unconstitutional “Anti-Hate Speech” policy
Cases
Case Overview
In September 2024, the Baraboo School District Board of Education proposed an “Anti-Hate Speech” policy that bans any use of district-defined “hate speech.” The proposed policy would unconstitutionally restrict student speech on and off campus, even when the off-campus speech has no nexus with the school, and restrict the right of district employees to speak about matters of public concern while off-duty.
On November 18, FIRE wrote a letter calling on the board to reject or revise the proposed “Anti-Hate Speech” policy.
