Indiana University: Suspension of all Interfraternity Council fraternities for unspecified hazing allegations
Cases
Indiana University
Case Overview
On November 14, 2025, Indiana University indefinitely suspended 27 Interfraternity Council fraternities, banning all social events and other chapter activities in response to unspecified hazing allegations involving only a few of the organizations. On November 19, FIRE publicly called on IU to end these sweeping restrictions and stop punishing student groups that face no misconduct allegations. The next day, IU notified chapters that it would lift the restrictions for organizations in good standing on December 1 and permit tailgating activities to resume for all groups on November 26. FIRE wrote to IU on November 21, reiterating that the First Amendment forbids collective punishment based solely on associations or similarities between groups and instead requires individualized disciplinary determinations.
