On April 26, 2023, the James Madison University Student Government Association passed Resolution 2, which “promised to increase scrutiny of all funding requests we receive.” FIRE, concerned by the phrase “increased scrutiny,” wrote the SGA President on May 22, requesting the SGA affirm its constitutional commitment to not make funding decisions on a viewpoint discriminatory basis. The SGA President responded on June 19, affirming that they will not make funding decisions on the basis of student group viewpoint.
