Case Overview

In December 2025, Seton Hall University’s Student Government Association denied the university’s chapter of Turning Point USA’s application to become a recognized student organization. In making their decision, the SGA cited concerns with materials, statements, and activities associated with TPUSA’s national organization.

FIRE wrote SHU and its SGA on December 22, explaining that SHU’s stated commitment to free expression precludes denying a student group recognition on the basis of the organization’s ideas or mission — and doing so constitutes impermissible viewpoint discrimination. FIRE urged SHU to ensure that all student organization recognition decisions  are made using content- and viewpoint-neutral criteria.
