FIRE Anniversary Event Celebrates Successful Defense of Liberty on Campus

FIRE held its anniversary celebration on November 5 in Philadelphia. Over 150 guests—including FIRE’s Board of Directors, Board of Advisors, staff, supporters, and friends—attended the event. FIRE President David French honored FIRE cofounders Alan Charles Kors and Harvey A. Silverglate for their enormous contributions and commitment to defending individual rights on college campuses. Pulitzer Prize–winning author Dorothy Rabinowitz delivered a keynote speech entitled “College Confidential” in which she recounted her bold 1993 Wall Street Journal column that helped expose the “water buffalo incident” at the University of Pennsylvania to the national media.

Another highlight of the evening was the presentation of the “Courage and Liberty Award” to Professor K. C. Johnson, who earlier this year was threatened with an unconstitutional inquisition into his views for speaking out against the Brooklyn College School of Education’s use of “dispositions” theory. FIRE also honored the presence of University of New Hampshire student Timothy Garneau, who sought FIRE’s assistance after he was evicted from his dorm last year and forced to live out of his Ford Contour for posting satirical fliers.
