‘The Coddling of the American Mind’ A Must-Read

You should definitely read Greg Lukianoff’s and Jonathan Haidt’s brilliant cover story in the September Atlantic, “The Coddling of the American Mind.” Drawing on extensive psychological research, they explain why the push — primarily from students who are, for legal purposes, adults — for trigger warnings, against micro-aggressions and for political correctness on campus is disastrous for students’ education and mental health. I’ve read a lot on the subject, but I learned more from this article about students’ “vindictive protectiveness” than from everything else I’ve read put together. The millennial generation has many admirable characteristics, but the desire of many millennials to deny freedom to others in order to protect themselves from offensive thoughts is destructive, to them and to American society as a whole.
