FIRE Launches Fully Redesigned Campus Freedom Network Website
PHILADELPHIA, February 27, 2008—To expand its ability to provide resources and interactive opportunities for students and faculty members across the country, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) is launching a fully redesigned Campus Freedom Network (CFN) website. The new CFN website will allow students and faculty to communicate quickly and effectively both with each other and with FIRE in order to defend liberty on their campuses.
"I invite all students and faculty who cherish the rights that make our universities truly vibrant centers of intellectual exploration to visit our new site and to join the CFN," FIRE President Greg Lukianoff said. "Using the new tools FIRE has provided, CFN members will be better equipped to take an active part in challenging censorship and promoting freedom on their campuses."
Drawing from FIRE's vast library of educational resources, the CFN will empower students to be their own advocates on campus, as well as provide new opportunities to network and share strategies with students across the country. The new CFN website will host a message board, audio podcasting, video uploading for FIRE's recently launched Multimedia Project, a list of FIRE staff and allies available for speeches, and FIRE's speech code widgets. These features will enable members to coordinate activities across university systems and across the country.
CFN members will be invited to attend FIRE's first annual 3-day summer conference, scheduled for the end of June 2008, where they will hear nationally recognized experts discuss the threats to individual rights on campus, learn how to overcome illiberal speech codes and threats to due process, and discover how to help our universities become the powerful marketplaces of ideas they are intended to be. The CFN will also host an essay scholarship contest for high school students and a video contest for college students.
Membership in the CFN is free. All interested students and faculty members are invited to sign up at the CFN website and receive a free FIRE t-shirt.
"We are thrilled about our new CFN initiative," CFN Associate Director Luke Sheahan said. "Members will play pivotal roles in helping to strengthen the foundations of liberty at schools across the country. Working together, we can accomplish truly great things."
FIRE is a nonprofit educational foundation that unites civil rights and civil liberties leaders, scholars, journalists, and public intellectuals from across the political and ideological spectrum on behalf of individual rights, due process, freedom of expression, academic freedom, and rights of conscience at our nation's colleges and universities. FIRE's efforts to preserve liberty across America can be viewed at thefire.org.
