Kaminer: Recent Controversy over Ethnic Slur Recalls Case of Donald Hindley at Brandeis
FIRE Board of Advisors member Wendy Kaminer, blogging at The Atlantic, writes about a recent incident for which Representative Carolyn Maloney of New York faced controversy after using the word "nigger" in the context of recounting the details of a telephone conversation. The fallout that has ensued reminded Kaminer of one of FIRE's worst cases, that of Brandeis University Professor Donald Hindley, who, as Kaminer reports, "was found guilty of racial harassment (after a secret investigation) for uttering the word 'wetback' while explaining its use." Read Kaminer's whole post here for more.
