It’s New Year’s Eve, and as we ring out the old year and ring in the new I wanted to take one last opportunity to remind our supporters that today is the last chance to donate to FIRE and get a tax deduction for 2007 (FIRE is a Section 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization). You can donate instantly online or over the phone by credit card, or just put a check in an envelope—as long as it’s dated and mailed today, it will count for 2007, and all donors get a letter from FIRE specifying the date and amount of their donations for their tax records.

Why should you donate to FIRE? Besides supporting liberty on campus, FIRE offers some great benefits for donating. In addition, FIRE has a unique opportunity right now to double the amount given by donors to assist in opening our brand new Manhattan office. A generous anonymous donor has agreed to match up to $75,000 in donations for the purpose of opening that new office. Just add in the comments online or on your check “for the New York office” or words to that effect, and FIRE can double the effect of your donation. It’s that simple!

If donating to FIRE isn’t in your plans this year, there are still very valuable things you can do to help FIRE fight for liberty and academic freedom on campus. One major thing that all FIRE supporters can do is subscribe to FIRE press releases to get up-to-the-minute info on violations of liberty (and FIRE’s victories) on various American campuses. Every FIRE press release contains the contact information of those at a particular university who have the power to act to preserve and defend liberty on that campus. A thoughtful e-mail to those administrators will often have a real impact on the outcome of the case. After all, FIRE always says that “Sunlight is the best disinfectant,” and e-mails from FIRE supporters let universities know that the sunlight of public exposure is shining on them. It’s amazing how much better behaved people are when they know others are watching.

Thanks to all readers of The Torch for their support in 2007. We look forward to an even more successful 2008!
