Second Annual Campus Freedom Network Conference a Smashing Success
The Second Annual Campus Freedom Network Conference took place June 18–20 and was a smashing success. Fifty-one students from across the country gathered in Philadelphia for two days of lectures, panels, and workshops on all aspects of free speech on campus. In an effort to maximize the conference’s potential, we filmed several interviews with students and speakers, live streamed the conference, and even invited students, FIRE staff, and the general public to join in a public conversation about the conference on Twitter using the #cfn09 hashtag.
The conference kicked off Thursday evening with dinner and a lecture by KC Johnson, professor at Brooklyn College and the CUNY Graduate Center and co-author of Until Proven Innocent: Political Correctness and the Shameful Injustices of the Duke Lacrosse Rape Case. Over the next two days, students heard from other leading experts on First Amendment rights—including longtime free speech champion Wendy Kaminer—and had the opportunity to attend a variety of sessions that taught them about their rights as well as strategies for defending those rights on campus. Sessions ranged from lectures on the philosophical foundations of liberty to small workshops where students discussed the speech codes on their individual campuses with FIRE staff members.
