Case Overview

On October 17, 2023, Emory University announced it had placed assistant professor Abeer AbouYabis on administrative leave pending an investigation into a Facebook post she made praising the “glory” of Palestinian “resistance fighters.” On October 24, FIRE wrote Emory urging the university to reinstate AbouYabis because her post, while offensive to some, is speech protected by Emory’s strong promise that its community members enjoy “freedom of thought, inquiry, speech, activism, and assembly” on campus.
