Loyola University New Orleans: Student Senate Denies TPUSA Recognition
Cases
Loyola University New Orleans
Case Overview
On October 15, 2025, Loyola University New Orleans’ Student Government Association denied the university’s chapter of Turning Point USA’s application to become a recognized student organization. TPUSA appealed, and on December 3, the SGA rejected the appeal. The SGA’s decision followed reports of student hostility on campus to TPUSA’s charter — including student protests at the SGA meeting space where the vote took place — and was made without providing any justification for the denial.
FIRE wrote Loyola and its SGA on December 22, explaining that Loyola’s stated commitment to free expression precludes denying a student group university recognition on the basis of the organization’s ideas or mission — and doing so constitutes impermissible viewpoint discrimination. FIRE urged Loyola to ensure that all student organization recognition determinations are made using content- and viewpoint-neutral criteria.
