FIRE Names Greg Lukianoff as Interim President

FIRE’s Board of Directors decided on Saturday, November 19, to name Greg Lukianoff the organization’s interim president. The appointment is effective on January 1, 2006. As FIRE previously announced, current president David French will leave FIRE at the end of this year in order to return to legal practice and has taken steps to enlist in the United States Army Reserve as a Judge Advocate General officer.

Lukianoff’s long and distinguished service to FIRE began in 2001 when he left legal practice in California to become FIRE’s legal director. Lukianoff is a graduate of American University and of Stanford Law School, where he focused on First Amendment and constitutional law.

Before joining FIRE, Lukianoff worked for the ACLU of Northern California, the Organization for Aid to Refugees in Prague, the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, and the EnvironMentors Project. He has published articles in The Stanford Technology Law Review, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Education, The Boston Globe, and numerous other publications.

A regular columnist for the Daily Journal of Los Angeles and San Francisco, Lukianoff is also a frequent guest on local and national syndicated radio programs. He has represented FIRE on national television shows—including The Abrams Report and Buchanan and Press—and has testified before the U.S. Senate about free speech issues on America’s campuses. Along with French and FIRE cofounder Harvey A. Silverglate, Lukianoff is co-author of FIRE’s Guide to Free Speech on Campus.

“No one knows FIRE better than Greg,” said French. “More importantly, the fact that he has graciously agreed to serve as interim president guarantees that, as I stated in announcing my departure, FIRE’s outstanding and necessary work will continue without interruption—through the coming transition period and beyond.”
