FIRE Summer Internship Begins: Introducing Michael Davidson

FIRE's summer internship program commences this week with six undergraduate interns joining the FIRE office for the next ten weeks. I would like to take the time to introduce Torch readers to each of FIRE's summer interns in turn.

Michael Davidson comes from Princeton University, where he is a rising senior. Majoring in philosophy, he is active in his fraternity and the Princeton Club Basketball team and volunteers as a coach for the Dillon Youth Basketball League. He has also served as a mentor for the Upward Bound Summer Program, tutoring low income students to prepare them for college. On how he came to be a FIRE intern, Michael writes:

I was first made aware of FIRE's internship program through the Princeton Career Services Department. I had heard of FIRE once before when a friend sent me a post by Harvey Silverglate, FIRE's co-founder and board chairman, responding to an op-ed that Princeton graduate Christian Sahner had written regarding Princeton's controversial freshman orientation play "Sex on a Saturday Night." I was extremely interested in the internship since at the time I was taking professor Robert P. George's course Civil Liberties and had been discussing First Amendment rights for a large portion of the semester. Additionally, I was and still am considering applying to law school after college and thought that FIRE could teach me a great deal about law, especially Constitutional Law. I perused FIRE's webpage and saw the work the FIRE was doing at colleges and universities across the country. I was especially interested in the cases that had occurred at Princeton University and at the University of Vermont, which is located in my hometown of Burlington, VT. I was impressed with the work FIRE was doing, applied for the internship, and I am very excited to have been accepted into the program.
