This special, one-day event offers students a thorough review of their right to free expression, focusing on the principles of free speech, the parameters of First Amendment law, and the best strategies for campus action. Attendees will learn about the evolution of free speech and the proliferation of unconstitutional campus speech codes.
The conference will feature a keynote address from Ken White, a partner at Brown White & Osborn LLP in Los Angeles. A former federal prosecutor, his practice includes both criminal defense and First Amendment litigation. He’s a frequent writer and speaker on free speech, the intersection of the First Amendment with internet culture and criminal justice, and offers astute and often humorous commentary for the popular “law, liberty, and leisure” blog Popehat, where he also helps arrange pro-bono defense of bloggers and other online writers threatened with frivolous defamation suits.
Our conference brings together college students from coast to coast and across the ideological spectrum who share a passion for free speech and due process. Attendees will participate in dynamic, interactive workshops hosted by FIRE’s staff members where students will learn about the First Amendment, gain skills to protect and celebrate their civil liberties, and ideas for putting that new knowledge to work back on their campuses.
FIRE’s West Coast Regional Conference is free to attend and open to current students at U.S. colleges and universities, including graduate students and incoming freshmen. Meals will be provided to attendees. Travel reimbursement for up to $300 per student will be available to help students travel to and from Los Angeles.
